Valet parking is a holiday risk

Holidaymakers who hand over their car keys to valet parkers at the airport could find themselves out of pocket, a Shropshire expert has warned.
Anthony Hughes, from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, said most people didn’t even think twice about letting valet parking staff get behind the wheel.
“You know how it is – you arrive at the airport and you’re in a rush to check in, with children, suitcases and passports to worry about, so you may not even consider the risk you’re taking by handing over your keys.
“And yet, research has shown that around 43 per cent of insurance policies don’t cover damage that’s caused when your car is being driven by a parking operator.
“So this means you’d be liable for the cost of any repairs and that’s all you need on top of the costs of a holiday.”
Anthony said motorists were increasingly opting to use “meet and greet” valet parking services at airports thanks to their ease and convenience.
“But it’s not just airports – many major hotels and entertainment venues are also adopting the same approach, so motorists need to be aware of the consequences of using such a service.”
He said it was vital that drivers checked their policy before handing over their keys to make sure they are covered, because otherwise if an accident did occur, the insurers could well refuse to pay out.
“Before you book, check the valet service operator’s terms and conditions too, as they will set out what insurance cover – if any – they have in place. They will also explain any exclusions, limits and excesses too.
“The onus will also be on you to spot and report any damage when you collect your vehicle from the valet parkers, otherwise you will have no proof that they caused it.
“Remember too that any personal possessions you leave in your car will also probably be excluded from your policy, so clear anything out before you leave the vehicle behind.
“It’s worth bearing in mind that these rules would also apply if you hand your keys over to car valet cleaning services, so it’s important to check the small print and protect yourself and your vehicle.”
