UK travel still needs the right cover

Holidaymakers who are planning a UK staycation after the lockdown eases must remember they will need travel insurance.

Dave Williams says shocking figures have revealed that over half the people questioned in a national survey said they had never taken out cover for domestic holidays.

“With more and more of us planning staycations in the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic, these results are very worrying, and it’s vital that families plan their paperwork carefully just as they would for an overseas trip.”

The research carried out by MoneySuperMarket showed that despite hundreds of thousands of travellers facing disruptions from cancelled travel plans after the crisis, 56 per cent of Britons said they would not be taking out cover for a British holiday.

In contrast, from the 6,000 people surveyed, around one in ten said they would always take out a policy for a UK trip.

Dave said: “The risks are still there, even if you’re only travelling a few hours from home, so failing to take out cover is simply irresponsible.

“If you don’t have the right policy in place, you could be out of pocket if your baggage gets lost, or you face delays or cancellations to your trip, or if any valuables are damaged such as camping equipment or hi-tech gadgets.

“Don’t assume just because you’re not travelling overseas that you won’t need protection – all trips involve transporting your family and your belongings from one place to another, and the risks are just as prevalent.”

Dave warned though that not all policies covered the same situations and it was vital for holidaymakers to check that the small print was appropriate for their personal circumstances.

“With the constantly moving picture as we come out of the Coronavirus lockdown, Government advice is fluid and the guidelines are subject to change at very short notice, so adequate insurance cover is key to help you plan your trip with confidence.

“This year is likely to see a huge increase in interest for UK-based holidays, but before you book, make sure you seek out the right cover to protect your revised travel plans.”
