Precious metal is top target

Thieves are targeting commercial properties across Shropshire in a bid to steal valuable metal wherever they can find it.

Rising metal values mean criminals know they can make money from a substantial haul, and now a local insurance broker has offered advice on how to reduce the risk of your company’s building being attacked.

Bryan Cutter, of Henshalls in Newport and Shrewsbury, said metal-framed windows, copper rainwater pipes, iron gates, manhole covers, and even church bells were all tempting targets.

“Think about applying anti-climb paint to drainpipes and roof guttering so it is difficult for intruders to reach the metal, but it should only be applied above 2.4 metres from the ground. Ironically you will also need to ensure there is clear signage to warn thieves the paint is there to make sure you comply with the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984 and the Health and Safety Act 1974.”

Bryan said property owners should regularly check the security of perimeter fencing and gates, and consider planting prickly shrubs around the edge of the site.

“Keep gates locked where possible and restrict vehicle access if you’re using contractors on site make sure you know who they are and when they are expected.

“Remove anything from your property that could be used to transport metal away from the site such as wheelie bins and wheelbarrows, and move anything that could help intruders climb onto the roof including water butts and garden furniture. If your business uses ladders, store them in a safe place, preferably chained to a wall and locked in a secure outbuilding like a garage or a shed.

“Ask neighbours to keep an eye on the site when you’re not there, and think about putting up signs to ask people to contact the police if they see anything suspicious. If you see any unfamiliar vehicles lurking in the area, make a note of their appearance and registration numbers this information could be invaluable to the police if an incident does occur.

“Taking a few simple steps could deter the thieves from targeting your property and save you precious time and money in the long-run.”
