Driver details must be correct

Shropshire motorists could face fines running into thousands of pounds for committing some of the simplest mistakes without even knowing they’re at fault.

Martin Pitchford, said motorists should be aware that there was a whole list of misdemeanours that could cost them dearly.

“Splashing a pedestrian by driving through a roadside puddle could lead to a fine of as much as £5,000, and even something as simple as having your previous address on your driving licence could cost you around £1,000.

“In fact, research carried out by CompareTheMarket has discovered that 1.5 million drivers in the UK currently have an outdated address on their licence.

“This is actually illegal in the UK and the fines imposed for this mistake mean the DVLA could bring in up to £1.5 billion from forgetful motorists.”

Mr Pitchford said motorists could also be invalidating their insurance if their documents were out of date, so if they were involved in an accident, their insurer could refuse to pay out.

“There are other mistakes that could cost motorists a lot of money – such as using your horn between the hours of 11pm and 7am in a built-up area unless another road user poses a genuine danger, or using your horn when you’re in a stationary vehicle.

“Dirty number plates are another issue – your registration numbers should always be visible – and even driving with snow on your car roof is an offence.

“Driving with a ‘for sale’ sign in your car window could be classified as trading from a public road according to local councils, and driving too slowly or in a manner that could obstruct the progress of other road users will lead to a fine of around £100.

“Don’t ask a stranger for change to pay for a parking meter either, as that is legally classified as begging!

“Make the time to check your paperwork carefully, including the address details on your driving licence, as well as the date your licence expires and that your photograph is up to date, as all those points can lead to a fine if they’re incorrect.

“Motorists may not realise just how many common mistakes they are making, but it’s clear that they could leave themselves vulnerable to an expensive and frustrating time, as well as making their insurance cover null and void.”
