Dash cam footage is invaluable

Motorists are turning to modern technology to help support their insurance claims, and insurers couldn’t be happier.
Dave Williams, said the actual number of people supplying dash cam footage in motor insurance claims had doubled over the last year.
“Research carried out by Co-op Insurance has shown policyholders are increasingly turning to dash cam footage to support their claims.
“And this can only be good news for insurers, as dash cams are like an extra pair of eyes on the road.
“The newer dash cams are particularly helpful as they include GPS tracking and can also record speed, which is often a factor in motor accident claims.
“The camera footage is an independent record of events, and it can really help insurers see exactly what happened during a road accident or a vandal attack.
“It often helps to reduce the time it takes to deal with a claim too, which is obviously good news for the motorist.”
Road safety charity, Brake, has also welcomed the increase in the popularity of dash cams, and said motorists were using footage to prove the circumstances of any incidents they had been involved in.
Brake spokesman Mike Bristow said: “Footage from dash cams is giving us a clear picture of the extent of the issues drivers face every day on our roads.
“It reinforces the fact that more needs to be done to educate drivers who choose to flaunt the law that their actions have consequences.
“We would hope that this increase makes drivers think twice about their behaviour, knowing full well that they could be caught out on camera.”
Mr Williams urged motorists to consider installing a dash cam if they didn’t already have one, as they could be invaluable when it comes to proving a claim.
“In particular, with the increase in the number of ‘crash for cash’ scams going on, where scammers brake suddenly in front of a motorist to cause a collision, dash cam footage could be just the proof you need to show that the incident wasn’t your fault.”
