Darker nights driving warning

Young motorists are being urged to take extra care now the nights are darker as winter approaches.

Martin Pitchford, said statistics showed that accidents increase at night at this time of year, after the clocks have gone back.

And he said inexperienced drivers were most at risk as the darker nights made it more difficult to judge speed and distance, particularly for drivers who had only had a short time behind the wheel.

“The Department for Transport Road Safety Report for Accidents last year showed seasonal peaks in road traffic accidents in the colder months, with autumn bringing the highest number of just under 36,000 reported incidents.

“And there are a number of reasons why the UK experiences an increase in road accidents at this time of year – fewer daylight hours, the difficulties of judging what is a safe speed and distance, and poor car maintenance.”

Mr Pitchford urged motorists (of all ages) to check their vehicle was ready for the winter by checking tyre pressure and treads, and checking light bulbs and engine coolant, as any defects could lead to a loss of grip on the roads, reduced visibility, or an overheating engine.

“As insurance brokers, we work with a wide range of insurers who specialise in black box insurance, also known as telematics insurance, which helps younger drivers to improve their driving skills and also reduces the likelihood of them being involved in accidents.

“This is a great way for parents to ensure the younger drivers in the family are acting sensibly behind the wheel, and that they are driving safely no matter what time of the day or night they’re travelling.

“The technology monitors how they drive, tracking their journeys and highlighting potential areas where their driving skills could be improved. And by installing this black box system, it could also bring down the costly insurance premiums that all younger drivers face, so it’s well worth considering.

“Driving at night and in difficult weather conditions can be a stressful experience, whether you have years of motoring behind you or you’ve just passed your test. But taking sensible precautions before you set out, and paying extra attention to the roads can make all the difference.”
