Brrrrr it’s time to dig out those thermals!

Well I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly feeling like winter has actually arrived.

WinterWith swirling winds and rain one minute, and freezing hail and snow the next the season is really starting to bite.

And it’s not just me that needs protecting from the elements.

If you run a business, it’s time to sit up and take notice of the severe weather warnings.

Night-time frosts across the county, combined with gale force winds, promise really difficult conditions and you can’t afford to ignore the signs.

We’ve all been here before of course; last year’s extended periods of bad weather disrupted businesses all over the UK. And this year looks set to be no different.

Frozen and burst pipes caused untold damage to premises and many working days were lost due to water leaks inside business premises.

And what starts as a small leak can easily become a major burst destroying equipment, floors and ceilings, with everything from stock, machinery, tools and computers being ruined beyond repair.

So now’s the time to check your premises thoroughly before the worst weather hits because even with insurance, the stresses on a business caused by water leaks could prove devastating.

Remember too, that if your premises are left unattended particularly over weekends, there are several steps you’ll need to take:

  • Keep your heating system on as though it’s business as usual, but just turn down the thermostat that way even in freezing conditions, the heating will come on preventing the water in your pipes from freezing and eventually bursting.
  • Make sure your pipes and the loft are insulated as this will help stop pipes freezing and bursting in areas most at risk from the cold such as outside walls and unheated areas.
  • And if a member of staff or security company is responsible for keeping an eye on the premises over any shut-down periods, make sure they know where the stopcock is in case they have to turn off the mains water supply in a jury.
  • It’s wise to have a clear plan worked out for what you’d do if there is a water leak and make sure all key contact telephone numbers are available for anyone taking care of your premises.

Don’t delay we all love to be tucked up warm and snug during the worst weather of the year, but doesn’t your business deserve the same winter comforts?

There’s definitely only one thing for it marshmallows and hot chocolate all round!
