Schools out for summer

Happy Times Are Here Again Happy Holidays everyone! Are we nearly there yet?

Kids on summer holidayNo, not the plaintive cry of a grizzly child in the back seat of a hot car in Telford just minutes into a long and stressful journey.

But the distressed call of a weary parent who has suddenly realised that it’s only half way through the most anticipated holiday break of the year the 6 weeks school summer holidays!

Now don’t get me wrong, I love being with my children and wouldn’t change them for the world.

But with three weeks down, and three weeks to go, the school holidays are proving to be one of my toughest challenges yet, particularly having to juggle full-time working at the same time!

We’ve been tearing our hair out trying to find activities that don’t cost the earth, and that appeal to everyone given the age-range of our brood.

At the same time, we’ve been pointing out to the teenage children that they won’t shrivel up in the sunshine so the garden is actually a good place to be as long as they watch out for my windows with that badly-aimed football!

Catching my daughter outside with my IPad was almost enough to finish me off (what is it with modern technology that’s got such a hold over our children??).

But in fact, she was watching a video on how to build a bat box which was a welcome revelation until I discovered she had already located a small hammer and was about to get started on her “project”.

We built it together in the end just to be on the safe side!

And it’s not just my family that seems to be battling these challenging times.

With the kids at home for such an extended period of time, figures show that major sporting events throughout the summer like the World Cup bring a sharp increase in broken window claims.

And the August Bank Holiday sees a definite increase in accidents in the home as children get up to mischief before they have to go back to school.

Accidental damage like spilt drinks on sofas and carpets, and damage to electrical equipment makes up almost a third of all the claims on household insurance, and overrun baths are always a risk. Thankfully the start of a new school term brings a 6% drop in accidental damage claims!

Accident cover is not included as standard in home insurance policies but Henshalls always advises clients to sign up for it now I can see why!

Happy Holidays everyone!
