Private drivers need protection too

Employees who drive their own vehicle for work purposes deserve the same protection as company car drivers.
Anthony Hughes, from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury, has warned employers have the same duty of care under health and safety rules to protect all their employees.
“It’s not just about company car drivers, or drivers of lease or hire vehicles, and it’s vital that employers remember they need to look after anyone who drives as part of their job.”
Anthony said many employees chose to opt out of traditional company car schemes and take the equivalent cash instead, and they must all be covered by a firm’s health and safety guidelines.
“Privately-owned vehicles should not be used for work unless they are fit for purpose, insured for business use, have a valid MOT, a regular service record and they’re roadworthy.”
He urged employers to carry out checks every year to ensure MOT certificates, service records, and insurance and tax were up-to-date.
“You should also regularly take a look at the vehicles, probably when they’re in the staff car park would be best. And give your employees check lists on the kind of ongoing issues they should be aware of such as tyre pressures and windscreen wash fluid levels.”
Anthony said anyone involved in a work-related crash – even if it was a damage only incident – must report it to their line manager or transport manager, even if the vehicle was privately-owned.
“By ensuring all your staff know what you expect, whether they’re driving their own vehicle or one owned by the company, you can ensure they are all travelling legally and safely at all times.”
