Insurers have revealed the most common reason for homeowners to make a claim – and it’s the humble carpet.
Martin Pitchford from Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury said the survey by Churchill Insurance showed the importance of taking out home contents cover.
“It’s such a simple thing and it’s so easy to overlook it, but home contents insurance is absolutely vital as it covers so many day-to-day occurrences.”
Mr Pitchford said ruined carpet was the most claimed for item in the UK, often as a result of a spillage, and it was closely followed by mobile phones.
“We all know someone who has dropped their mobile phone – and even some who have dropped it down the toilet! – and phones accounted for a fifth of the top ten accidental claims in the last year.
“Computers, televisions and smaller electrical items such as hairdryers made up the rest of the top five most claimed for items, and it’s clear that this kind of claim affects our everyday lives.”
Mr Pitchford said the survey had shown that the majority of claims were for over £600, which proved that contents insurance was a must-have policy.
“The most expensive claims were surprisingly linked to sofas, followed by watches, laminate flooring and even fishing equipment – all of which came ahead of jewellery in the claims list, which only ranked as the fifth most costly claim.
“Obviously accidents can – and will – happen, but it’s important that homeowners sign up for a policy that meets their individual needs and requirements.
“Policies are not all the same, and if you’re unsure of what you’re covered for, you should check with your insurer as you may need to amend your policy to include new or expensive purchases.
“Consider the amount of excess you’d be willing to pay too if you needed to make a claim, as this will affect your premium – but remember that a cheaper premium doesn’t guarantee the best protection, so think carefully before you sign up.”
